World War I Submarine Operations

WWI submarineWWI Submarine - World War I U-Boat

This chronology is compiled from twelve different sources. In the cases where disagreement crept in, American Democratic principles were invoked; The Majority Rules!

1. All ship’s names are in italics.

2. Entries which provide information not directly related to submarine operations are also in italics.

3. Names of ships are not prefixed with the usual SS, HMS, SMS, USS, DD, BB and on and on. Instead, in the text, all ships are identified by name, type and nationality.

4. The term U-Boat is not used. They are instead referred to as “German submarines” and Austrian submarines are identified as such.

5. German submarines were of three general types:

     U-XXX     Long range, ocean-going types.
     UB-XXX         Smaller, coastal types.
     UC-XXX         Tanker submarines.

There was only one German submarine that had an actual name instead of a number; SMS Deutschland, originally built as a submersible cargo ship to thwart the British blockade. After one or two trips, was converted to a minelayer. Observe caution, because in many cases, the U, UB, and UC boats shared the same hull numbers.
