Join Us For This Exciting Day-Long Program:

“Borrowed Soldiers” - Historian and professional archivist Mitch Yockelson tells the engrossing and largely untold story of American troops who fought under British command on the Western Front.

“The Roosevelts At War” - Spanish-American War hero and former President Teddy Roosevelt was an early and vocal advocate for America’s entry into World War I. During the war, TR’s entire family served the country in some way, and his four sons, courageous and daring to a fault, paid a high price for their involvement. Presented by WFA East Coast’s Genna Rollins.

"This is what Gives Men Grit': Pennsylvania's 28th Division at Apremont"
- The 28th Division's heroic defense of the French town of Apremont in the Meuse-Argonne from 28 September to 1 October 1918 was one of the most exciting and remarkable episodes of World War I. Presented by historian Dr. Ed Lengel of the University of Virginia.

“A Recreation of Wings” - Aviation artist, historian and pilot Mike O’Neal presents a fascinating behind- the- scenes view of the WWI flying replica aircraft operated by Pennsylvania’s Golden Age Air Museum. From construction planning to test-flights, follow the builds and historical back stories of the museum’s Sopwith Pup, Curtiss Jenny, Rumpler C.V, SPAD and Fokker Triplane.

“Collecting Postcards From World War I” - Postcards were at their height in the 1910s, so the documentation of The Great War was thorough – from home front to the trenches. Collecting these items is an inexpensive way to own a piece of this heritage, and they become more poignant when there is a message mailed home from a soldier at the front. WFA East Coast’s Paul Petersen leads this exciting exploration of WWI’s visual record.

The symposium will also feature refreshments, displays, door prizes and the opportunity to tour the YCHT’s exhibit “Front Porch to Front Lines – York County Goes to War”
